Challenge
For more than 12 million people, America began in New York Harbor: Lady Liberty on the horizon, Ellis Island underfoot.
To mark the 140th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, MMevents and the Statue of Liberty–Ellis Island Foundation wanted a tribute worthy of two of the most recognized monuments in the world, and of the families whose stories began there.
The setting made it one of the most demanding shows a team can take on. New York Harbor sits beneath some of the busiest airspace in the country, ringed by major airports and active day and night with ferries, commercial vessels and harbor traffic. Flying nearby the water adds its own complexity, with wind, distance and no margin for a drone to leave its path. And because the show honored national monuments and a deeply personal chapter of American history, the storytelling had to be precise, accurate and respectful.
Solution
Pixis designed a custom 500-drone light show that told the story of arrival in the sky above the same waters millions of immigrants once crossed. The show moved from the voyage to the first sight of Lady Liberty to the promise of a new life, synced to a narration created specifically for this show. Every element, from launch site to flight path to timing, was planned around the monuments and the harbor environment, so the show could unfold seamlessly above the audience on Ellis.
Impact
The show turned a historic anniversary into a shared moment. Guests watched the story of their own families, and of the country, take shape above the harbor where it began, with the Statue of Liberty as the backdrop. It also demonstrated that even in the most complex airspace in the country, a drone light show can be both technically flawless and deeply moving, a standard Pixis brings to every flight in New York City.
