Challenge
The country's biggest tennis tournament doesn't just open with the first match the nights before it set the tone for the whole event, and this year two nights carried real weight: one to welcome the city that hosts the tournament, the other to honor a legend just days before their Hall of Fame induction. One meant flying 1,500 drones from two locations at once, perfectly synced, across New York City. The other meant a tribute precise enough to broadcast live into a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium and on ESPN, timed to the minute.
Solution
Night one told the whole city this tournament belonged to it before it even began— five boroughs, one show, no VIP list, just everyone looking up together. Night two took that same energy and gave it a face: a career, a family, a legacy sealed in the sky days before it was made official in Newport.
Results
The show for the boroughs gave New Yorkers in every part of the city a reason to look up together, generating strong local and social media coverage. The tribute show aired on ESPN and was broadcast live into a packed stadium ahead of the legend’s Hall of Fame induction, putting the moment in front of both the fans on-site and a national broadcast audience at the same time. The shows drew heavy media pickup across the two nights, extending the moment well beyond the crowds who stood outside and watched it unfold overhead.
Why It Worked
The sequence honored a legend's place in the sport, by first showing what the sport means to the people who show up for it—the fans, the neighborhoods, the city that built the stage they play on. By widening the lens first, and then narrowing it the next night, the tribute landed as more than a highlight-reel moment. Over two nights, we showed up for the tournament’s city and for the people who built the sport of tennis.
